Feeling Embarrassed?
By: Molly Nichols
Disclosure: In case anyone was curious why I write about things like body image, anxiety, and anything else, it’s because it’s a coping mechanism for me. I write about things that touch me, when they touch me. If something I write about sticks out to you for any reason, I urge you to read it, if it doesn’t, then that’s totally okay. Don’t bother reading something that doesn’t interest you.
I wouldn’t :)
Anyway, I was gonna begin today with the idea of embarrassment, which is such a tricky feeling because no one can seem to attack it. Since this week I am officially Taylor Swift obsessed, I’m gonna use her as my example throughout the rest of this post. It’s hard to imagine that celebrities feel the same emotions we feel sometimes, it seems crazy that they could have been in the same situations we’ve been in, but I’m about 98% sure that they have at some point or another, felt anxious, stressed, embarrassed, inadequate, and most of all, unconfident. They’ve all failed at something whether that be writing a terrible song that got no buzz, or blinking in a paparazzi photo (which doesn’t seem like a big deal...until it winds up on the front cover of TMZ)
I guess my point is that, we’ve all been there. Take Taylor Swift for instance, “the girl who can do no wrong,” turns out Kanye West didn’t think so at the 2009 VMA’s if you can remember that (now that’s what I call embarrassing). Something less embarrassing? Well what about Jennifer Lawrence’s tumble over her ball gown at the 2013 Oscars or Sofia Vergara’s ripping of her own floor length gown on the red carpet at the 2012 Emmys. Kinda makes you spilling your water bottle all over the desk and floor seem like not so big of a deal, right?
Well, if my reassurance and accurate comparisons haven’t calmed you down enough, time will. It’s hard when you do something embarrassing, trust me I know. Falling down, sitting down in some type of gooey substance that undoubtably happens WHENEVER you’re wearing white pants (tell me if I’m wrong), I don’t know maybe something as minor as being late to class (totally me btw). Whatever it is, embarrassment is natural and it’s okay to be a little bit upset with yourself for messing up every once in awhile. The important thing is, and something I hope you come to be okay with, is that life is super messy. Everyone, even Ms. Taylor Swift (through no fault of her own) must have been feeling pretty embarrassed after having the microphone ripped out of her hands at the VMAs.
So the next time you’re feeling a little embarrassed for dripping water down the front of your shirt at school or for choking on something breaded at lunch....please please please, take two minutes to clean up and recover and then laugh at yourself. And if someone makes you feel bad for laughing at yourself, come to the conclusion that they haven’t reached the same level of maturity that you have. Embarrassing as it is to burp or sneeze or fart in a public setting, everyone and I mean Taylor Swift herself, does it too. Don’t beat yourself up about it, and try to encourage others to have that attitude about the embarrassing moments as well. It’s okay that you’re not perfect because the truth is (as cliché as it sounds) being perfect is totally boring.
You got this and I love you :)
Xoxo, Molly
